Since the duty of the former Mt. Fuji Weather Station was restrictedly meteorological observation, however, future station of NPO will be open for wider fields.
Utilization plans, proposed up to the present
More than 30 research proposals have been submitted, the abstracts are as follows:
- Atmospheric Chemistry: Mt. Fuji is an observation tower of 4000m in the free troposphere. Long range transport of polluted air over the Asian Continent can be easily observed as well as the vertical distribution of greenhouse gases.
- High Altitude Medical Sciences: The physiological effect of 60% oxygen on the human health will be studied in detail, which will elucidate the mechanism of high altitude diseases, new metabolic pathways of fat and etc.
- Astronomy; Low humidity of the summit of Mt. Fuji is ideal for the telescope observation. Sub milli-wave telescopes can show the electron clouds in the space.
- Ecology; Permafrost can be found only at the summit of Mt. Fuji in Japan. In the research of special moss and lichens, the effect of global warming on the distribution of permafrost will be elucidated.
- Glaciology; Air pollutant which is trapped in the rime can be studied with electric microscope to show their origin.
- Youth Natural Education; Expedition on the wide natural ground of Mt. Fuji can provide good fields for environmental, scientific and emotional educations.
- Training; Adaptation to high altitude is an effective tool for the sport training of many fields. Scientific research and effective application of high altitude training will be possible in utilization of the station.
