New Year Greetings

Prof. Katsumi Asano
Chair of NPO “Valid Utilization of Mt. Fuji Weather Station”

I wish you all a Happy New Year for 2008 !

On July 21, 2007, we, the NPO members were able to contract with Japan Meteorological Agency to utilize a part of Mt. Fuji Weather Station, as the first unique case in Japan. According to the contract,we could officially maintain the facility for 2 months from 2007 to 2009. Thus, from July 10 to Sept. 5, 2007, we could safely maintain the station and support 9 research projects (4 projects in high altitude medical science, 2 in atmospheric chemistry, one in cosmic ray research, one in ecology and one in safety system research), having 3 staff at the station..

On Nov. 21, we had a press conference at the Tokyo Press Center, the content of which appeared in the TV news of the day and in the news papers of the next day.

This year is the year of the Hokkaido Toyako Summit which will be focused on the global environmental problems such as global warming and trans-boundary air pollution. We would like to take this chance to show our activities in monitoring at the Mt. Fuji weather station, continuing the research in the summer to serve the national health problems.

We sincerely ask for your warm understanding and cooperation to our activities.

 Mt. Fuji Observatory Building No.1.
Instrumentation for the measurement of atmospheric trace species installed on the second floor of Mt. Fuji Observatory Building No.1.
Instruments include SO2 monitor, sulfate particulate analyzer, integrating nephelometer, aethalometer, filter samplers (sequential low-vol sampler, sequential soil dust sampler), scanning mobility particulate seizer, optical particle counter, Radon monitor, ozone monitor, aerosol impactors for electron microscopic analysis, aldehyde adsorption tube, hydrocarbon adsorption tube, and CO2 flask sampling.

Ozone Concentration
Temporal variation of black carbon concentration at the summit of Mt. Fuji during 2007 summer intensive measurement campaign.

Several examples are identified on the valley wind transport of pollutants from the planetary boundary layer to the summit, e.g., increase in the concentrations of black carbon in the later afternoon to the early evening on July 23, 25, and 26. Decrease in the concentration is obvious during the passage of Typhoon No. 5 on August 2 and 3.

Decrease in the scattering is obvious during the passage of Typhoon No. 5 on August 2 and 3.
Temporal variation of ozone concentration at the summit of Mt. Fuji during 2007 summer intensive measurement campaign.

Considerable variation of ozone concentration was observed. In some cases, ozone concentration becoame around 70 ppb, which would be related to pollution transport or tropospheric intrusion. Decrease in ozone concentration is obvious during the passage of Typhoon No. 5 on August 2 and 3.
Quick reports on the temporal variation of black carbon, aerosol scattering coefficient measurements (Naoki Kaneyasu), and surface ozone at the summit (JAMSTEC/ Tokyo Metropolitan University/ NPO Mt. Fuji)
